Ruthin Society Sale Report 2023

Topping the Charmoise trade and taking the top price of the sale at Ruthin society sale was a
cracking shearling ram from Stephen Jones – Plas Flock making 900gns, That was followed by rams at
750gns, 700gns and 680gns, This was Stephens first time selling at a society sale. The pen of 8 was
2 nd in the best pen competition and made an average of 610gns.
Following on came a bid of 650gns for a shearling ram for O.Roberts – Hafod Flock and 600gns for a
2yr old ram that was reserve male Champion from Garn Flock. 500gns was achieved by Camlad,
Gwynys, Hafod, and Eidda flocks
Topping the female trade at 420gns was an aged ewe That was reserve female champion from
B.Moseley – Garn flock. Following that was a shearling ewe from J&R Powell Camlad flock at 400gns
and 380gns from Garn Flock.

Top prices were as follows:

  • Aged ewe £550 guineas from J&R Powell.
  • Yearling ewes £550 guineas from D Elgin and Sons.
  • Yearling Rams 1500 ,1100,1050,1000 ,and 1100,guineas from Ben Mosley and J&R Powell.
  • Ram lambs 550 and 520 guineas from Clive and Helen Roberts.
  • Ewe lambs to 350 guineas from Clive and Helen Roberts.

Results of the Show as follows:

  • Female Champion J&R Powell, Reserve Clive and Helen Roberts.
  • Male Champion Ben Mosely Reserve Cai Jones.
  • Overall Champion Ben Mosely Reserve J&R Powell.
  • Best Pen Ben Mosely,Reserve Ethan Thomas.

J36 Society Sale Report 2023

The English premier show and sale for the Charmoise Hill sheep society was held at NWA Junction 36 on Saturday 14th October. Buyers and seller were in attendance from throughout the UK, all keen to purchase sheep of this ever increasing popular breed. The sale topped at 550gns for Haford Armani being a shearling ram from the first prize pen of rams from OL Roberts, Ruthin. Other shearling rams sold to 480gns from WB McTaggart, Hawick. Other shearlings were regularly selling at 350gns to 400gns. A keen interest in female from both new and existing breeders saw gimmer shearlings sell to a top price of 400gns from B McTaggart, Hawick who sold others at 300gns and 280gns. Ewes sold to 300gns for a two crop ewe from GE Edgar, Brampton with also achieving 300gns from MR B Moseley, Ceredigion. Other ewes regularly 200gns to 250gns.

Welshpool Society Sale Report 2022

The second Society sale of the season on the 29th September 2022, and another superb showing of Charmoise sheep with 135 sheep forward from 11 different flocks. The pens and rings were packed out with old and new buyers.

Top price of the day went to an aged ewe from Anna and Milton Jones MinyFfordd flock.  The reserve female champion in the show sold for 1300gns to Matt Prince, Stonedge flock, with others selling to 800 and 550gns.

Yearling rams were a flying trade with the 2nd prized yearling ram taking the highest price at 1150gns from Dylan Williams Pwll flock.  Lot 1834 sold for 1000gns from B.G.Moseley Garn flock.  Lots 1797 & 1798 sold for 950 and 900gns respectively from J&R Powell, Camlad Flock.  800gns was achieved from Garn, Camlad and Minyffordd flocks. The Pre-sale Show Champion from C & I Jones, Cybi flock sold for 650Gns, the pen of 9 were also awarded the best consignment, with Garn flock awarded 2nd.

Top three prices in the yearling ewe class went to B.G.Moseley Garn flock. The reserve overall champion from Garn sold for 850gns to E.Evans Ty Coch, two other lots went for 750 & 700gns. C & H Roberts Orseddwen flock had a fantastic first sale selling ewes to 650 and 550gns.

Ram lambs from the same flock sold for 580gns for lot 1868, others sold to 500 and 450gns.

Aged ram from D.Eglin Bramain flock sold for 400gns.

A super first outing for E.Evans & Sioned Mair Nant Fedwen flock. Lot 1753 a ewe lamb placed 1st in the pre sale show selling for 250gns, and also gaining 1st place in the show with their ram lamb.

Ruthin Society Sale Report 2022

We kicked off the sale season with a tremendous selection of males and
females at Ruthin mart on the 9th September 2022.
And what a sale it was, with not one but two new breed records, The Pre-sale
champion an aged ram sold for a new breed record for a male at 1700gns, the
3 year old ram Lot2045 was sold by O L Roberts Hafod Flock and was bought by
the Eidda Flock. That was followed by a new record price for a yearling ram, A
son of the champion and Reserve champion on the day again from The Hafod
flock sold for 1400gns
The 2 nd prized yearling ram from the Camlad flock sold for 900gns
1 st prize ram lamb sold for 400gns from the hafod flock to Matt Woodhouse
Yearling Ewes topped at 220gns from the cariad flock

Winter 2021/22 In lamb ewe sales

Members have had a successful time selling pedigree in-lamb ewes over the winter months.

At Welshpool, a high of 550gns was achieved by David Eglin for a yearling ewe. Others sold to 470 and 440gns, C Harries achieved a high of 240gns on two occasions.  in total 12 ewes were sold with an average of 325gns  

At Ruthin, Emyr Roberts and Tracy Salisbury were selling the last of their Bont and Famau flocks, 5 ewes were forward, and they ranged from 580gns to a high of 1450gns with an average of 872gns. 10% of the proceeds of the sale were being donated to Cancer Research UK and the entire sale price of the last ewe were being donated, this ewe topped at 1450gns selling to Mr Trow. Thank you for your many years of dedication to the society and enjoy your retirement . 

Mr Eglin had 4 ewes on offer, all were scanned singles, a high of 550 was achieved with an average of 475gns . 

In total 9 ewes were sold with an average of 695gns.

The Powell family, Camlad Flock, had a reduction sale of in lamb ewes at Welshpool Market on the 14th February. Top quality ewes averaged £515, with a top price of £735. J & R Powell would welcome any further enquiries/sales.


Welshpool society sale report

To commemorate the 25th year of the Charmoise hill sheep society, the Chairman of the French Charmoise sheep society, Mr Bernard Salvat was invited to judge the show. To thank him for his attendance he was presented with a Charmoise society body warmer.
At the sale Charmoise hill sheep topped at 800gns paid by George Denson, Holywell, for a January-born yearling from Emyr Roberts, Lon Wynne, a breeder who has won the Royal Welsh breed championship in 2010, 12, 13 and 15. Mr Denson will use the ram for crossing with Welsh Mules and Texel crosses.
Its sire took second top price at 700gns paid by Milton Jones, Newtown, bred by R.G & B.G Moseley and also owned by Emyr Roberts.
Charmoise ewes topped at 620gns paid by Milton Jones, Newtown, for a yearling ewe bred by Emyr Roberts.
